Canines with a Cause special presentation to the Bells Corners Girl Guides
October 27, 2003

Canines with a Cause was invited to do a presentation with the Girl Guides groups in the district area of Bells Corners. A group of 36 young girls (ages 9-12) and their leaders were able to learn more about some of the challenges some people face daily when dealing with their disabilities, different types of service dogs and tasks they do to help their partner gain more independence.

Noah turning light switch off

Noah opening door of cabinet and getting object inside

Noah following the laser pointer

Clancy (whos' officilaly retired from doing presentations) showing assistance with laundry

Here's some of the feedback we received from one of the Girl Guide Leader:

"...The girls gained a great deal of compassion and understanding that evening and were anxious to help in any way they could. Following that evening our troops went to camp where we made dog bandanas and dog cookies to sell at our up-coming District Xmas Tea, to help raise funds for Mrs. Mas's organization Canines with a Cause and to help create further awareness of her work in the community. Before Mrs. Mas's presentation, the girls were only aware of seeing-eye dogs, but now comprehend the full potential of enrichment to a disabled person's life that a trained & loving companion can make...."

We want to express our appreciation to Barbara Maxwell for organizing this presentation and the rest of the leaders and Girls at the Girl Guides Bells Corners District for all their efforts in helping create awareness and raising funds for Canines with a Cause.

UPDATE Jan.2004: The wonderful Girl Guides Bells Corners District groups have organized their own fundraiser for Canines with a Cause and worked hard to make doggie bandanas which were sold by them during one of their public events. There will be an official presentation of the collections from this fundraiser at a later date in March 2004.

Thank you girls & ladies!

RBC Royal Bank - Kinburn Branch makes public donation towards the purchase of CWAC puppy/ies during October 3, 2003 event.
October 3, 2003

RBC Royal Bank Kinburn ON staff, left to right: Kirk Dudtschak, Bob Bouchard, Bette Deugo, Darlene Dickson, Jackie Laughlin, Debbie Cline, Suzanne Lalonde, Ron Sauve. Front, CWAC founder Miriam Mas and Noah.

On October 3, the Kinburn Royal Bank branch presented Canines with a Cause a donation of $750 towards the purchase of a puppy/ies to enter the program.

The warm welcoming and the excitement of each and every staff member who were all very concious of the positive impact of their donation was to remember.

This is a wonderful statement of support for our efforts in helping people with disabilities achieve more independence with the assistance of a service dog.

There are a great amount of "CWAC Heroes" behind the success of each certified team (applicant + service dog) that helps making the dream of independence possible. Today, the RBC Royal Bank staff at Kinburn branch have become a great piece of the puzzle. You are definitely a part of the future success in making someone's dream of independence possible. When groups like yours decide to help out with monetary contributions, it truly makes a great impact.

On behalf of our board of directors, and on behalf of a future recipient of a service dog: THANK YOU!

Bob & Doughboy's Graduation Ceremony -
July 5, 2003

Saturday July 5th, 2003 Canines with a Cause had the absolute pleasure to share the successful story of graduating our first Team (applicant + service dog). Together with the recipient were family members, sponsors, breeder, volunteers and other people who have been involved in the process.

During the ceremony, Canines with a Cause had a moment of recognition to those who have been a key player to this process. To symbolize their importance in being part of this successful story, several people, received a closed envelope with a piece of a puzzle. As they were called in, each one of them placed their piece in the puzzle which symbolized the Certificate of Graduation for Bob and Doughboy.

Amongst those in the list:

This puzzle was kindly donated by Scott Stafford, from Jig-saw-Puzzles. A tremendously talented man with a kind hard who didn't think about it twice to donate this handcrafted piece of art after hearing about our cause. Thanks Scott! Check out his puzzle gallery!

The ceremony was also made possible thanks to the kind gesture of David Rees from Total Media Systems Inc. who kindly provided the LCD projector and other equipment needed for the presentation. Thanks David!

Also, Father Tom & Tim from St. Patrick of Fallowfield Catholic Church were very kind to allow us to conduct this ceremony in their brand new beautiful Hall.

General Mills was very generous to donate many of the sandwiches and refreshments that follow after the ceremony. Thanks!!

Robert &Doughboy, with General Mills corporate sponsor representative, Janet Charlebois and Canines with a Cause founder, Miriam Mas..

"Canines with a Cause" AND "Adolescents at Risk & K-9's"
2 organizations collaborating together for a better community
June 12, 2003

NOTE: This collaboration is no longer active at this time - 2004

Canines with a Cause has been in close communication with the representatives of the non-profit organization AARK (Adolescents at Risk & K-9's).
The organization AARK is focused on promoting the development of positive behaviour changes in at risk adolescents, through the implementation of a -setting up for success driven- learning based assistance dog training program.

One of the end results from the AARK program is trained Service Dogs ready for placement. Thus, working in collaboration with AARK represents that Canines with a Cause would be able to help more applicants in need of Assistance Dogs.

To learn more about this wonderful program, and/or to provide support to it, visit their website: http://members.rogers.com/braziermas/aark.

April 15 & 17, 2003 - Presentations to Sparks and Cubs at Elmdale School

Kerry Adams, one of the Sparks Leaders and Michael Roy, one of the Cubs leaders both at the Elmdale School kindly requested a presentation for their groups.

Tuesday April 15 we met with the Sparks group with delight. The girls were very eager to learn about Service Dogs and ways they help their partners that are wheelchair users. Their intense attention became very obvious when one of the girls kindly asked: "Miss, could you "pause" the presentation for a moment, I need to go to the bathroom and I don't want to miss anything.". This was Noah's (3 month old black lab in-training) first attendance at one of our presentation.

Thursday April 17 we met with the Cubs group who were also very eager to take in how much these dogs change the life of someone affected with a mobility related disability. Their leaders were great at also combining the presentation with awareness exercises where they experienced personally how difficult some tasks could be if they were limited with a disability. This was most likely Doughboy's last presentation, since he has finalized the training program and will soon start team training with his new handler prior to graduating from Canines with a Cause.

We want to thank both groups for being such good participants and listeners as well as for collecting a donation for Canines with a Cause.

Thanks Toni for your assistance, and thank you to everybody involved in arranging the availability of the room and taking the time to attend.

February 15, 2003 - CWAC special presentation to local groups representatives

On February 12, CWAC conducted a special presentation dedicated to a group of representatives from local organizations. Organizations attending this presentation were MS- Society of Canada (Ottawa chapter), Paul Menton Centre for Students with Disabilities (Carleton University), and the Centre for Students with Disabilities (Algonquin College).

During this presentation, CWAC shared information regarding Service Dogs in general, as well as general knowledge on Canines with a Cause, including our purpose and goals, who can qualify for a Service Dog, the application process and follow up services after graduation etc. A live demonstration with Doughboy also took place. We also discussed ways to work together in finding a qualified applicant for Doughboy.

Both the representatives from Algonquin College and Carleton University kindly requested if CWAC would be available to do a presentation/demo to a group of their students with disabilities, which we agreed to do in the near future.

Also, the representative from MS-Society offered to post an article on CWAC and Doughboy to help find the right candidate and create more awareness at their end.

Thank you to all those who kindly took the time to attend and learn more about CWAC, Service Dogs, and Doughboy.

Working together to serve the community is a common goal!

January 8, 2003- Tax receipts in people's stockings

A few days before Christmas, Canines with a Cause had the pleasure to meet with a kindhearted lady, who's name is Lary Lindsay.

She was looking to provide Canines with a Cause with a very generous cash donation on behalf of 9 members of her family, each one of them who would find a tax receipt in their stockings on Christmas day.

Lary was glad to skip the crowded malls and stores and as she commented: "For me, having the opportunity to meet you and Clancy and Doughboy as part of my Christmas "shopping" was so much fun - sure beats pushing your way through a crowded shopping mall!"

Needless to say she got a free calendar !! She mentioned that she had thought about purchasing the calendars instead but had thought that we would get more money this way and still be able to sell calendars. What a nice lady!

On behalf of all the board I thanked her for her generosity and support.

December 9, 2002 - Unique opportunity to apply for a Service Dog ready to start team training

Canines with a Cause has today a unique opportunity to place a trained service dog with the right candidate in the Ottawa area.

We will start the interview process of those applicants interested in being considered for this in the coming weeks.

  1. Do you live in the Ottawa or Penetanguishene area?
  2. Do you have Canadian Citizenship?
  3. Are you affected by a mobility-related disability?
  4. Do you believe you can benefit from our services ?
  5. Are you aware that teaming up with a Service Dog requires a great deal of responsibility an effort from your part to keep up with the existing training and general care and well-being of the dog?
  6. Are you willing and ready to schedule a 2-week of intensive team training with short notice?

If you answered YES to all these questions, you might not want to miss this opportunity. It takes approximately 1 to 2 years to get a Service Dog ready to the level of the dog we have today available for the right candidate. Please contact us and we will be sending you an application form.

Some of the tasks this dog has been trained to perform:

  • picking up items accidentally dropped (such as keys, coins, papers, wallet, bank cards...)
  • getting certain items by name (phone, leash...)
  • bringing items pointed with laser pointer
  • bracing (giving you support) when getting in and out of bed and/or wheelchair.
  • helping to get undressed (by pulling socks off, pulling sleeves...)
  • opening and closing doors/fridge
  • turning lowered light switch on/off
  • pushing public access buttons
  • triggering emergency Lifeline button and bark on speaker to indicate the need of assistance to the operator

After all interviews have taken place, the Board of Directors will make a decision on who will be accepted to start the 2 week of intensive team training. We will have 2 or more possible candidates in a waiting list for the possibility that the 1st candidate chosen might not successfully pass the team training period and/or the tests required to be certified.

If the match between the candidate applying and the service dog in question is seen as successful, then the candidate would be required to pass 3 tests upon completion of team training: a written test. a practical test and a public access test. If the candidate manages to pass these test at the required level (we have high standards for all our applicants) the candidate would then be certified as a team and ready to attend the graduating ceremony and enjoy a new life with a great canine partner.

There is a possibility that during the 2 week of team training it becomes obvious that the match is not successful and then the next candidate on the list would be considered to proceed with the next team training.

If you would like to read more about our application process, visit our service page, section how to apply.

If you would like to see pictures of training sessions, visit our training page.

NOTE: Even thought, the average cost of a Service Dog from acquiring, training, placing and certifying is approximately $10,000 CAN, these costs are covered by our organization's fundraising efforts, private and corporate sponsorships, and assistance from other organizations, businesses and volunteers. Applicants for a Service Dog at Canines with a Cause are required to pay a non-refundable administration fee of $25 (this does not guarantee that the applicant will receive a Service Dog). Upon completion of training and after team successful passes the required tests, the only other cost to the applicant is $200 to cover cost of the service dog's equipment. Once an applicant has successfully graduated from our program, he/she is encouraged to participate in fundraising events and/or assist during public presentations/demonstrations to help create awareness.

PLEASE NOTE: We would like to mention that Assistance/Service Dogs are not meant for everybody. They require a great deal of responsibility. Assistance Dogs are highly trained, intelligent canines but they are still dogs. They must be cared for daily. They require toileting several times daily regardless of the weather. Service Dogs require time, effort and attention on a daily basis for food and water, affection, grooming, obedience training, skill training, play, and work in the capacity they were trained to do.

If you still believe you would like to consider applying for a service dog, please contact us.

We are asking for donations of $200. Cash donations to Canines with a Cause are tax deductible and a receipt would be provided. To show our appreciation for your donation , we would like to:

September 17, 2002 - Lifeline Canada, Personal Response Service & VHA Health and Home Support to assist our program.

Canines with a Cause met with the VHA Health and Home Support Executive Director, the Ottawa Lifeline Program Manager and two representatives from VHA and VHA/Ottawa Lifeline program, on September 9th, 2002. During this meeting, Miriam Mas, President of Canines with a Cause shared in more detail what the program is about. She also expressed how much Canine's with a Cause would benefit from the use of Lifeline Canada's Emergency Response Service and button, in order to properly train the dogs to act in an emergency situation.

Lifeline Canada gladly agreed to assist us in our efforts to train the dogs by donating the necessary units and adaptive equipment for that purpose.

When the person in is their home and in need of emergency assistance, if they are able to speak, they will ask the Service Dog to retrieve the phone, but if unable to speak or unconscious, the dog will have to press the button which is linked to this Emergency Response Service.

When the Lifeline Response Center comes through in the speaker communicator, the dog will then bark to advise the Lifeline Response Center that the particular client is in need of assistance. Therefore, potentially making a great difference in a life threatening situation.

Many thanks to Valerie-de Young, VHA Executive Director; Jane Krider, Lifeline Canada, Ottawa Program Manager and Debbie Chaudhari and Debra Barlow, representatives from VHA and VHA/Ottawa Lifeline program, for their willingness and enthusiasm to help our program.

Also, special thanks to Hal Wirsching, the Lifeline Program Manager from Penetanguishene, Ontario, for facilitating and installing the unit in time for the recording of one of the episodes of the upcoming new series Healing with Animals with Discovery Health Canada. This episode will be aired in the coming months after the New Year and will demonstrate how these units are utilized and how the dogs are trained to use them.

Presentation at Canadian Canine Academy -May 13th
, 2002

Location: National Equestrian Park - Ottawa

On occasion, Canines with a Cause joins the puppy classes at Canadian Canine Academy as part of the distraction training for our dogs. And several times we have done presentations with the intention to encourage the new puppy owners on their training task ahead as well as to inform them about Service Dogs and what our organization is about.

During this presentation Doughboy put on a good "show". Taken in consideration that his biggest distraction is other dogs, he did very well in a room with some 30 people and about 10 puppies. He was confident and able to concentrated on the tasks given with no problems.

Presentation at Our Lady of Peace Elementary School - December 7, 2001

We had arranged to do a short presentation (15 min or so) thinking that their attention span would be short. To my surprise, (and their teacher's) the presentation lasted 45 minutes! These kids had great interest and brought many questions and comments to the group.

On our way out of the school, another teacher of the Grade 1 class kindly asked if we didn't mind doing a second presentation for her class. And so we did. This time, it lasted 20 min. since our schedule was running short.

A new presentation for other grades in this same school will be arranged soon. This time, a larger group of audience will be set up at the school gym.

Many thanks to the teachers at Our Lady of Peace who brought with great enthusiasm awareness on service dogs to the kids in their classes!

As previously arranged, on Sept 21-23 we went to pick up Pillsbury's Dream Maker (aka Doughboy), at Penetanguishene ON. The trip went very well and we are now back in Ottawa and starting Doughboy on his advanced training.

Doughboy has been very well exposed to multiple situations with both his puppy raising family, the Bullock family, and in particular, Holy (who did an excellent work). He's very well mannered and learns quickly.

While in Penetanguishene we had the greatest pleasure to stay with Lisa Grey and her husband Kevin (excellent cook!) and Java, of course. But the trip was completed when we had a chance to see Kiwi (Lisa's first service dog now retired) at the horse farm.

Our most sincere thanks to all! Donating Doughboy to our organization is definitely a very significant gesture of support.

Presentation during NOAH Meeting at the Ottawa Humane Society - Sept. 11, 2001

Bruce _ Executive Director of the Ottawa Humane Society invited Canines with a Cause to their monthly meeting NOAH to speak about the new organization and discuss ways that could be consider as future cooperation between the two organizations.

The meeting went very well and we will definitely look to work together in the process of rescuing as many dogs as possible that are suitable to become Service Dogs. This presentation didn't include a demo session but we provided the attendants of the meeting with multiple pictures of our training sessions.

A verbal agreement was discussed in a way that when Canines with a Cause would contact the Ottawa Humane Society requesting a possible candidate for a Service Dog, the specialized staff at the shelter would perform a careful screening of temperament and when a candidate is selected, they would contact Canines with a Cause to perform a one-month temperament test that would specifically put the dog into as many situations as possible to rule out any kind of aggression or fear and to ensure the dog is happy performing the kind of work is required from him/her.

Presentation at Swallow Creek Farm - Sept. 9, 2001

Dan and Sarah Mayo invited Canines with a Cause to do a presentation at their Annual End of Summer Party. This took place at a beautiful horse farm. A large crowd of family, friends and dogs attended and although the heat was a factor on Clancy's (our demo dog) demonstration part, the reception was incredible.

Many thanks to Dan and Sarah for giving us a chance to create more awareness on Service Dogs and our organization.

CWAC 1st Service Dog Awareness &
Demo Event - June 2001

Although the number of people attending the event was not excessive, those who attended showed great interest in learning the benefits of Service Dogs.

We are pleased to tell you that since that event, the number of members of the Board of Directors has increased to 3 now. We also have 2 tentative members who might be joining us soon.

Our sincere Thanks you goes to:

  • Lisa Grey, and Java from the Kiwi Society who did an excellent presentation, and her husband Kevin for taking care of photographs

  • Larry and Lola Ryan for not only organizing the Bells Corners United Church Youth group but also offered the use of their video camera and tripod

  • Bells Corners United Church Youth Group: an energetic and very efficient group of young people who worked very hard setting up the room and cleaning it up afterwards. They were our first recipients of Canines with a Cause Certificate of Appreciation.

  • Joanne Moss for giving us the idea of inviting the Youth group to get involved in the clean up which save the organization $50 professional cleaning fee for the hall.

  • The media including The Citizen, Majic 1000, CHRI, New RO, and Rogers for freely announcing this community event, and

  • To all of you who provided us with contributions to cover the cost of the minimal rental hall fee

Trip to visit The Kiwi Society - Penetanguishene, ON - April

A trip to meet with Lisa Grey, from Kiwi Society in Penetanguishene, Ontario had been initially planned for March. However, due to some planned and unplanned issues, we decided to postpone this meeting until this past April 25-30.

Lisa Grey with Java and Clancy - Penetanguishene ON

Lisa has been an inspiration to me since Day 1. She is a person who is totally dedicated to enhancing the lives of individuals with disabilities (with special focus on children), through placement of specially trained assistance dogs. Lisa has put many hours into educating the community and is quick in setting up an information/awareness session when requested. Her skills in training dogs and communicating with them are tremendous.

Lisa Grey and Java

Her current service dog, Java (just a year old) is an exceptional dog, probably the youngest working service dog today, that can easily predict a seizure 40 minutes in advance. Java is capable of bringing the laundry basket down the hall to the laundry room, and transferring the clothes into the machine. When done, she can retrieve the items, put them back into the laundry basket, and bring them back to her apartment. The same with the garbage bag once she has opened the front door. She can open the fridge as well, identify the item to be retrieved, and is able to bring it to whomever Lisa asks Java to deliver it to. She can turn the light switch on and off and carry objects in her mouth quite proudly. Java makes Lisa's life that much more independent. They have a great bond together.

Thanks Lisa, for making yourself available! I am very grateful to both you and Kevin (excellent cook and photographer!) for your hospitality and willingness to share your knowledge and experience.

Canadian Canines Academy to open doors to Canines with a Cause

Randy Chartrand, President of Canadian Canine Training Academy Inc. replied to my request to volunteer (and/or observe) during his training classes with the following:

I had a look at your website. It looks great. I have had the opportunity to prep a few service dogs with their obedience prior to being sent off to National Service Dogs for their 8 Month training. I think its a great thing you are doing and if you would like to come out some time give me a call and we could set it up....

Talk to you soon.
Randy Chartrand
President Canadian Canine Training Academy Inc.

I have started to attend both Basic Obedience and Puppy Kindergarten classes.

Randy is certified in dog psychology, basic Veterinary medicine and Dog Nutrition. In the past several years he has helped thousands of people find solutions to dog problems that can take the joy out of having a dog, such as destructive behavior, aggression towards people and other dogs, separation anxiety and anything else dogs can do.

I want to express my sincere THANK YOU to Randy for opening the doors of his Academy to Canines with a Cause. With this, you are helping to enhance the knowledge and experience that we can later offer to those in our community with disabilities.

Recently, Randy received Canines with a Cause Certificate of Appreciation for all his assistance.
