International Disability Day
Dec.3, 2004

CWAC was invited by MDAC (Members with Disability Action Committee) of PSAC (Public Service Alliance of Canada) to do a presentation at Ottawa City Hall during The International Day for People with Disabilities. We also had the great pleasure to learn about other organizations and businesses dedicated to improve the lives of those affected with a number of disabilities.

The Members with Disability Action Committee kindly presented CWAC with a beautiful Thank You card, a beautiful coper mapleleaf pin 'Under one Roof' (OCAPDD) and a very generous donation to our charity.

Thank you, Pat Mc Grath, Rachelle Halpenny and all the members at MDAC for giving us an opportunity to share what Assistance Dogs are, what Canines with a Cause is about and also learn about other so very interesting groups and organizations in our community.

CWAC Founder nominated for 'O Canadian' CBC Weekend News
Sunday November 28, 2004

On November 28, CWAC Founder, Miriam Mas appeared on CBC News during an interview after being nominated by one of their viewers as a 'True Canadian' for their program 'O Canadian'.

As a result of this interview, a similar interview has been requested by another producer of CBC for the program called Country Wide. Stay tuned for details about when this interview will air.

Letter from the CWAC Founder:

Hello,

I wanted to share with you a bit more about my appearance on National CBC News: Today's Weekend Edition for a show called O Canadian.

This came as a result of being nominated by one of their viewers as a 'True Canadian'. Needless to say I feel very humble and tremendously honored with this special nomination. One of CBCs viewers who also happens to be a tremendous volunteer for our organization, Susan Gold, sent them the most wonderful letter nominating me and this past Friday, CBC asked me to appear in their show Sunday November 28th.

It is very hard to express the feeling of great gratitude to someone who sees me in their eyes worth of such honorary title and amongst such great Canadians!

This TV appearance evolves very closely around CWAC and how it all got started. What makes this work of service so special and how we are making a difference in the community.

I want to share the letter Susan Gold sent to CBC as it is just so beautiful and well written.

Thank you,

Miriam Mas
Founder of CWAC

Letter from CBC Viewer nominating CWAC Founder:

“O Canadian” – Miriam Mas

May I draw to your attention a great Canadian, Miriam Mas of Ottawa, a woman who, when faced with her own death, managed to evade that destiny, and resolved, subsequently, to devote the remainder of her life to community service. Thus began the organization, Canines with a Cause (CWAC), founded by Miriam in 2001, devoted to the acquiring, training and placing of assistance dogs as companions for individuals with physical disabilities, for seizure and hearing response, as well as to ongoing community-based education about the work of assistance dogs. The training programme is based on positive reinforcement, giving CWAC dogs a sense of confidence about their appropriate behaviours, while ignoring and redirecting the unwanted ones.

Today Miriam works tirelessly on everything from administrative duties and website management; fundraising at both the community level and the corporate level; giving presentations to youth groups; training CWAC dogs, and providing support to CWAC dog trainers; taking dogs to a seniors residence for friendly visiting; and coordinating all aspects of volunteer activities. While maintaining the ongoing concerns of the organization, Miriam also has her eye on the future, developing and maintaining connections with breeders; temperament testing on puppies who show potential for service; searching out a wheelchair accessible site where training and office facilities can be combined; and participating in the development of a newly formed Canadian coalition of service dog agencies. All of this while being a spouse, a parent, and working.

Miriam Mas is one of those silent heroes who does so much for others, honouring her volunteers, her donors, CWAC clients, and the dogs, and in her humility does not expect recognition or material benefit. Devoted to the improvement of life for others, Miriam Mas is a Canadian in the truest sense of the word.

Awareness presentation at Queenswood Public School
October 19, 2004

Canines with a Cause had the pleasure to put forward 2 presentations for the children and staff at Queenswood Public School. Both the group with the younger half of the children as well as the second half with the older were very eager to learn about assistance dogs and became very enthusiastic when they saw Doughboy (AKA Cogan) and Noah do tasks such as turning the light switch on/off, press buttons, trigger an alarm, open/close cabinets, pick up coins, bring the phone, etc.

Miriam Mas asking Noah to turn light switch off (with his paws) after he had turned it on (with his muzzle).
During this presentation, the children learned about different types of disabilities; how assistance dogs provide help on a daily basis to people who are confined to wheelchairs, who have poor balance, who are deaf, or blind and so on.

Overall they develop a more sympathetic view for those who suffer from disabilities, but also, a good understanding of the impact a service dog has on its partner.

After the presentation, we provided the children with a CWAC brochure and a CWAC Activity booklet to take home.

Thank you Mrs. Walker for organizing this event!

Miriam Mas asking Noah and Doughboy (AKA Cogan) to ignore tasty dog treats put infront of them with the command 'Leave it'. Food control is an important part of the training Assistance dogs go through. With the command 'Leave it' the dog is expected to turn the head away from the food.

To schedule a school or children's group presentation, contact us.

Hill's to support CWAC dog food program with special rates for very special dog food

August, 2004

In June 2004, Dr. Van Delst, DVM representative of Hill's Pet Nutrition Canada approached CWAC with the offer to donate a free 40 lbs. bag of quality prescription dog food for each of the dogs in our program so we could try the quality this product has to offer.

Aware of the importance of quality nutrition working dogs require and the importance of maintaining and extending good health in the life of a service dog, Dr. Van Delst, was confident that our vet as well as ourselves would be very pleased with the change of dog food. Indeed we are! Our dogs love this food and seem to thrive with it.

We are pleased to say that we have come to a partnership were Hills Pet Nutrition Canada will provide this very special dog food for the puppies and dogs in our program as well as those who are certified from our program at a very special rate.

We kindly want to acknowledge our appreciation and gratefulness to Dr. Van Delst for his efforts to look into this opportunity for our dogs as well as Hills for providing at a special rate such wonderful quality food for our dogs.

March 26, 2004

The support of the Government of Ontario through the Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration is gratefully acknowledge.

Canines with a Cause is pleased to share the good news that the Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration has granted funding to CWAC to persue the Community AccessAbility (CAA) Project titled: CWAC Youth Educational & Awareness Project on Disabilities and Assistance Dogs

This one year project is oriented to help create awareness on disabilities as well as help our youth understand how different types of assistance dogs can help their partners become more independent.

CWAC Youth Educational & Awareness Project on Disabilities and Assistance Dogs is oriented to the children in our community.

Our goal is to help our youth foster acceptance of each other's differences, understanding of the needs of others with disabilities and to communicate the importance each one of us can play in enhancing our community. Helping the youth in our community understand that they too, no matter the age, can help make Ottawa a better city.

The funding that CWAC will receive from The Ministry of Citizenship will assist in the costs that will be involved in the following:

  • live presentations and demonstrations (approx.15 small presentations to several children community groups or fewer presentations but offered to larger groups such as whole schools etc)
  • creation of CWAC Kids Zone website designed to educate the youth in a fun and engaging way (status as of July 2004 'in progress')
  • design and print of educational material (children's brochure; activity educational booklets)

Canines with a Cause
Presentation at Trinity United Church & Children of Sunday School
January 18, 2004

Canines with a Cause was invited to do a special presentation for the children of the Sunday School attending Trinity United Church. Prior to do so, we were welcomed by the whole church congregation and we provided them all with a brief description of what our organization is about.

Arlene, one of the church members who contacted us for this event, read to the congregation the values that our organization believes in and that she had had a chance to read on our website. This had helped them choose our charity as one to support for the next few months. The children bring forward every Sunday their own special monetary contributions. They are collected for a period of 6 months and then presented to the charity of their choice. We were very pleased to hear that Canines with a Cause was chosen to be their charity of choice for the next few months.

Our most sincere Thanks for the beautiful support from the young members of the Trinity United Church and to Arlene, who took the time to learn more about Canines with a Cause and decided to invite us to their children Sunday school.

This promises to bring a very professional solution for a couple of projects, one being a very informative interactive presentation that would be presented to potential corporate sponsors and another one is oriented to educate the younger members of our community in a fun and light way.

Thank you to the coordinator of the course Mrs. Hawley and their teacher Mr. Kozodoj and in particular to the 3 students assigned to assist us: Sarah, Soo, and Meghan!
