CWAC 2005 Annual Celebration & Graduation Ceremony
Dec. 3, 2005

Many gathered on Dec. 3, International Day for People with Disabilities to celebrate the successful graduation of 3 CWAC Teams. CTV News was also present to help share the good news to the community.

Unfortunately, one of the teams to graduate, Mike & Sassy could not be present due to an unfortunate vehicle accident. They will join the teams of 2006 for a chance to celebrate their success. You were missed! We wish for all affected a quick recovery.

In the agenda, a great public speaker and an inspiration to so many, Kevin Frost. As well great entertainment provided by Raw Faith.

As expected, there was a very emotional moment during the speeches from the graduates and while watching the multimedia presentation with a collection of many pictures accompanied by songs of the many small moments expressing the many emotions, efforts put forward, and end results.

The event was wrapped up with a Silent Auction fundraiser which turned out to be very successful, raising a total amount of $1,356!

There were many community supporters that made possible for this event to be as successful as it was. Check the list!

CWAC Fire Station Training Session
Nov. 2005

Part of the intensive training CWAC undergo requires careful exposure to situations that they may encounter once working with their partner. A special training session was organized to socialize the dogs in the program to emergency crew, fire trucks and we as well simulated an emergency situation where the puppy/dog's handler pretended to be in need of help, and the paramedics came to provide it. Part of this drill requires the paramedic to remove the assistance dog from the handler's side so the emergency crew can get to the person and provide the medical assistance require. There has been occasions in the US where assistance dogs in real life situations took the stand to defend their partner against all odds and they were shot by police so the emergency crew could reach to help their human partner. Therefore we considered this training session a very important one as these dogs need to be acceptant of a stranger in such uniforms removing them from the partners' side and remain as calm as possible throughout it all.

We want to thank the Fire Department and crew who kindly assist throughout this session.

Brigit's Birthday Party Fundraiser
Sept. 2005

Brigit is a special pup. She turned a year old and celebrated it with style. Her owner, Colleen came up with the wonderful idea to organize a Doggie Birthday Party / Fundraiser for CWAC. Those invited to celebrate with them were kindly asked to make a donation to Brigit's favorite charity in lieu of presents for her dog. There were games, treats for people and dogs as well as human and doggie cakes. Loot-bags for the pooches and great fun for all. Local TV A Channel came to broadcast the event.

The total amount raised for CWAC was $345!

Thank you Colleen & Brigit! and all who generously participated!

CWAC receives a donation of 5 Labrador Retriever puppies by The Legault Family
August 25, 2005

There are not enough kind words to express our gratitude to the Legault family for their wonderful contribution to Canines with a Cause by donating 5 Labrador Retriever puppies to our program.

Left to Right: Kate Brazier & the Legault Family with each holding a puppy.

On August 22 we receive such offer by phone. Mr. Legault mentioned he and his family were very interested in making a difference in someone's life through the donation of then 9 week old puppies to our program.

We quickly looked for temporary foster solutions to house and care for these puppies and Julie More (our Puppy Raiser Supervisor) and Miriam Mas (founder & trainer) headed off to meet the Legault family and to perform several puppy attitude temperament tests to see if any of these puppies showed to have the potential we look for when selecting puppies for our program. As it turns out, all 5 passed the tests with flying colors and so after a couple of hours trip, we arrived back in Ottawa with all of them.

Below are a 4 of the temperament test exercises we perform on puppies. An approximately 40 min is spent with each puppy doing around 15 to 20 different temperament tests exercises and recording their reactions.

Puppy investigating dancing and singing dog. Something most dogs react to in a cautiously way. Good sign to see the puppies interested enough to want to come closer and not feel it could be a threat.

Puppy investigating unexpected strange object (umbrella) that suddenly opened in front of him. This is important for a future assistance dog that might encounter unexpected objects and needs not to panic.

Puppy showing no signs of struggling to go down when picked up. Indication of not a dominant pup

Puppy again relaxed when restrained belly up. No indication to struggle to stand up. Happy to wait for 'top dog' to finish. Signs of a puppy that won't be challenging a leader too often and will be happy to follow directions.

A thorough examination by the vet confirmed also our feelings that these puppies were in very good health and outstanding disposition. The vet gave 3 of the puppies an A and the other 2 an A+.

All of the puppies were happy to sleep through the night for 6 to 7 hours straight from day 1 and if any had a little fuss it was short and sweet and quickly fell asleep again. They are progressing well with crate training and potty training and are socializing in a controlled environment in a very positive way.

We are very grateful to the Legault Family for such great gesture of support and generous contribution. In particular their 9 year old son, Jacques, who these puppies belong to and did a wonderful job caring for them. He proudly helped us load the 5 puppies into the crates in the CWAC van and is pleased to receive updates on how well all the puppies are doing. You're an inspiration to many, Jacques!

Thank you to everybody who's come forward to help provide temporary and long term foster homes for these 5 puppies. In particular, The Halchuk Family, Jason & Vanessa, Diane & Ken, Jane & Dave, Tanya & Marco, Dave & Francine, Bob & Karen, Kerri & friends.

Also a great appreciation goes to Dr. Beltran and staff at Blair Animal Hospital for their wonderful care and support to CWAC.

Due to our limited resources (both human and financial) we are being forced to release 2 of these puppies. One of the 2 has just now been placed in a home where he will be trained as a Therapy dog. The other one will soon be going to a pre-approved family home.

We are in need of occasional temporary backup foster homes for puppies and dogs in the program during times when their puppy raisers are unable.

Meet Maia

Maia will remain in the CWAC program at the Ottawa location and will be puppy raised by Diane P.

Meet Chica

Chica will also remain in the CWAC program at the Ottawa location. We are in the process of finalizing who will be her long term puppy raiser.
NOTE: update 2006. Unfortunately Chica didn't make it in the program. Her disposition and temperament was perfect. However, she had a loose hip and She has successfully placed with a wonderful adoptive family.

Meet Storm (Chaser)

Storm has now been successfuly adopted and placed with a loving and caring family that was pre-approved by our team.

Meet Tess

Tess will be going to our remote trainer location to be trained as an assistance service dog. NOTE: update 2006. Unfortunately Tess didn't make it in the program. Her disposition and temperament was perfect. However, she had loose hips. She has successfully placed with a wonderful adoptive family.

Meet Nash

Nash is the only boy of the bunch. A very relaxed and laid-back pup who has been placed in the home of our Board member and volunteer coordinator Tara Egan where he will be trained as a Therapy dog.

Volunteering opportunity:

We are looking for someone able and interested in providing temporary occasional care for puppies and dogs in the program as a backup system for when their puppyraisers are unable to do so. Please contact us if you are interested or you know someone who might.

Below are some of the requirements we are looking for:

CWAC foster volunteer should:

  • live local in Ottawa
  • be at home with the puppy as puppy is not to be in the crate during the day for longer than 2 hours.
  • have direct access to a fenced yard (no apartments please as potty training would be too difficult)
  • be committed to follow our instructions including crating the puppy/dog at nighttime.
  • be able to travel to west end for 1 hour weekly group training sessions (if the occasional care is for a week or longer)
  • not have more than 1 other dog at home and/or cat
  • have the support from the rest of his/her family

We are also in great need for Corporate Sponsorships, groups with fundraising initiatives and monetary contributions to help us provide the best care and training for these puppies. Please contact us to better learn our needs and how you can be of help.

Donations of items such as dog treats, dog toys, leashes, collars, towels, and such are also much welcomed.

CWAC receives a donation of a Minivan!
June 2005

We received the news of a Minivan being donated to CWAC with great excitement as this is going to make a tremendous impact at this point in time allowing us to travel around the city of Ottawa with a much greater flexibility.

In need of services for signage

We want to express our gratitude to the donor of the Toyota Sienna who has preferred to remain anonymous, for such great generosity and gesture of support. This is a wonderful testimonial of your belief in this organization and its values. A defined time for CWAC as it will provide a huge improvement in the services we offer to the community.

Also, we have been relying up to now a great deal with wonderful support from volunteer drivers and we want to express our great appreciation for their time and effort.

We are looking for a local signage company to be able to donate in-kind services to do the signage for the vehicle (put your mouse over the image of the van above to view a design in mind). If you know of one, or you own one, please contact us in order to arrange the details.
