Update April 21, 2003: Clancy's reluctance to retirement, is being more reinforced with his arthritis and late age. He continues to be a great model for pups to learn to respect and properly greet adult dogs in a very safe and clear way. Continues to want to perform some not too demanding tasks when his health permits.

One day he left us…

Adapted from J.M. Ballarin script

If it was expected or not, all of a sudden or after long agony, it was always a shock. We could not really believe it. We were still waiting for him to get up, to come to life again, to look at us with such  loving eyes.

The time came when we had to deal with the vet protocols. We surrounded him with our blanket of  love, hoping he would find some comfort with familiar faces he so much loved and loved him back. Later,  a silent prayer . .. A candle and  the hope that he would now be free of pain, and that one day we will meet again.  And we started to learn  how deep was the emptiness he had left  here amongst us.

We went back home, and still waiting, with disbelief, as if he were about to  greet us at the door . But at home we didn't have the welcoming that we once knew so well…and we started to wake up from the nightmare.

We started to feel the mourning of "things". Every dog is himself, his collar, his blanket, his feeding bowl. Certain objects, certain corners belong to a certain dog. When that dog is gone, the collar, the blanket, the bowl, are no longer an object. They become an emptiness. They belong to only one life. No other dog, ever again, is going to make use of them in the same way. Full, they become empty and they mourn.

We became an emptiness. That was the worst moment of all, when with serenity; we understood everything we had lost. Everything that became empty in our souls.

Meanwhile, we continued. We went for more walks, without him, and we wept…

Until one day, when we found the "glimpse". We couldn't tell if it came like a lightening or if it was a slow coming, but the instant arrived when we felt the air was filled with his presence.

Everything became a memory. The corner beside the table, the sticks in the path, the paw prints in the snow…

Until one day, when we felt the seed. When a loving family pet leaves us, a seed is implanted inside our heart.  A mourning that will be with us forever, a promise, a strange peace, untouchable, made out of pain and hope.

Meanwhile, our good friend became a prayer. Until one day, when we will meet again. When we will find him again, together with our loved ones. The same way , just as we all were when they were still here with us.  We want to go for walks together again. And feel the tenderness of their presence once again.

When the time comes, we are not only going to find our good old friend. We will also find his collar, his blanket, his feeding bowl, and our old shoes we once wore when we went together for our walks …
