April 21, 2003 - Presentations to Sparks and Cubs at Elmdale School

Kerry Adams, one of the Sparks Leaders and Michael Roy, one of the Cubs leaders both at the Elmdale School kindly requested a presentation for their groups.

Tuesday April 15 we met with the Sparks group with delight. The girls were very eager to learn about Service Dogs and ways they help their partners that are wheelchair users. Their intense attention became very obvious when one of the girls kindly asked: "Miss, could you "pause" the presentation for a moment, I need to go to the bathroom and I don't want to miss anything.". This was Noah's (3 month old black lab in-training) first attendance at one of our presentation.

Thursday April 17 we met with the Cubs group who were also very eager to take in how much these dogs change the life of someone affected with a mobility related disability. Their leaders were great at also combining the presentation with awareness exercises where they experienced personally how difficult some tasks could be if they were limited with a disability. This was most likely Doughboy's last presentation, since he has finalized the training program and will soon start team training with his new handler prior to graduating from Canines with a Cause.

We want to thank both groups for being such good participants and listeners as well as for collecting a donation for Canines with a Cause.

March 24, 2003 - Special presentation given at Algonquin College Residence

Toni Connolly, Team Leader at The Centre for Students with Disabilities (Algonquin College), organized a special presentation for interested students with disabilities from Algonquin College.

Canines with a Cause was very pleased to present information on Service Dogs in general, about the Canines with a Cause organization itself, and application process and Doughboy was there to "show off" some of the tasks he's learned so far.

Thanks Toni for your assistance, and thank you to everybody involved in arranging the availability of the room and taking the time to attend.

February 15, 2003 - CWAC special presentation to local groups representatives

On February 12, CWAC conducted a special presentation dedicated to a group of representatives from local organizations. Organizations attending this presentation were MS- Society of Canada (Ottawa chapter), Paul Menton Centre for Students with Disabilities (Carleton University), and the Centre for Students with Disabilities (Algonquin College).

During this presentation, CWAC shared information regarding Service Dogs in general, as well as general knowledge on Canines with a Cause, including our purpose and goals, who can qualify for a Service Dog, the application process and follow up services after graduation etc. A live demonstration with Doughboy also took place. We also discussed ways to work together in finding a qualified applicant for Doughboy.

Both the representatives from Algonquin College and Carleton University kindly requested if CWAC would be available to do a presentation/demo to a group of their students with disabilities, which we agreed to do in the near future.

Also, the representative from MS-Society offered to post an article on CWAC and Doughboy to help find the right candidate and create more awareness at their end.

Thank you to all those who kindly took the time to attend and learn more about CWAC, Service Dogs, and Doughboy.

Working together to serve the community is a common goal!

January 8, 2003- Tax receipts in people's stockings

A few days before Christmas, Canines with a Cause had the pleasure to meet with a kindhearted lady, who's name is Lary Lindsay.

She was looking to provide Canines with a Cause with a very generous cash donation on behalf of 9 members of her family, each one of them who would find a tax receipt in their stockings on Christmas day.

Lary was glad to skip the crowded malls and stores and as she commented: "For me, having the opportunity to meet you and Clancy and Doughboy as part of my Christmas "shopping" was so much fun - sure beats pushing your way through a crowded shopping mall!"

Needless to say she got a free calendar !! She mentioned that she had thought about purchasing the calendars instead but had thought that we would get more money this way and still be able to sell calendars. What a nice lady!

On behalf of all the board I thanked her for her generosity and support.

December 9, 2002 - Unique opportunity to apply for a Service Dog ready to start team training

Canines with a Cause has today a unique opportunity to place a trained service dog with the right candidate in the Ottawa area.

We will start the interview process of those applicants interested in being considered for this in the coming weeks.

  1. Do you live in the Ottawa or Penetanguishene area?
  2. Do you have Canadian Citizenship?
  3. Are you affected by a mobility-related disability?
  4. Do you believe you can benefit from our services ?
  5. Are you aware that teaming up with a Service Dog requires a great deal of responsibility an effort from your part to keep up with the existing training and general care and well-being of the dog?
  6. Are you willing and ready to schedule a 2-week of intensive team training with short notice?

If you answered YES to all these questions, you might not want to miss this opportunity. It takes approximately 1 to 2 years to get a Service Dog ready to the level of the dog we have today available for the right candidate. Please contact us and we will be sending you an application form.

Some of the tasks this dog has been trained to perform:

  • picking up items accidentally dropped (such as keys, coins, papers, wallet, bank cards...)
  • getting certain items by name (phone, leash...)
  • bringing items pointed with laser pointer
  • bracing (giving you support) when getting in and out of bed and/or wheelchair.
  • helping to get undressed (by pulling socks off, pulling sleeves...)
  • opening and closing doors/fridge
  • turning lowered light switch on/off
  • pushing public access buttons
  • triggering emergency Lifeline button and bark on speaker to indicate the need of assistance to the operator

After all interviews have taken place, the Board of Directors will make a decision on who will be accepted to start the 2 week of intensive team training. We will have 2 or more possible candidates in a waiting list for the possibility that the 1st candidate chosen might not successfully pass the team training period and/or the tests required to be certified.

If the match between the candidate applying and the service dog in question is seen as successful, then the candidate would be required to pass 3 tests upon completion of team training: a written test. a practical test and a public access test. If the candidate manages to pass these test at the required level (we have high standards for all our applicants) the candidate would then be certified as a team and ready to attend the graduating ceremony and enjoy a new life with a great canine partner.

There is a possibility that during the 2 week of team training it becomes obvious that the match is not successful and then the next candidate on the list would be considered to proceed with the next team training.

If you would like to read more about our application process, visit our service page, section how to apply.

If you would like to see pictures of training sessions, visit our training page.

NOTE: Even thought, the average cost of a Service Dog from acquiring, training, placing and certifying is approximately $10,000 CAN, these costs are covered by our organization's fundraising efforts, private and corporate sponsorships, and assistance from other organizations, businesses and volunteers. Applicants for a Service Dog at Canines with a Cause are required to pay a non-refundable administration fee of $25 (this does not guarantee that the applicant will receive a Service Dog). Upon completion of training and after team successful passes the required tests, the only other cost to the applicant is $200 to cover cost of the service dog's equipment. Once an applicant has successfully graduated from our program, he/she is encouraged to participate in fundraising events and/or assist during public presentations/demonstrations to help create awareness.

PLEASE NOTE: We would like to mention that Assistance/Service Dogs are not meant for everybody. They require a great deal of responsibility. Assistance Dogs are highly trained, intelligent canines but they are still dogs. They must be cared for daily. They require toileting several times daily regardless of the weather. Service Dogs require time, effort and attention on a daily basis for food and water, affection, grooming, obedience training, skill training, play, and work in the capacity they were trained to do.

If you still believe you would like to consider applying for a service dog, please contact us.

September 17, 2002 - Lifeline Canada, Personal Response Service & VHA Health and Home Support to assist our program.

Canines with a Cause met with the VHA Health and Home Support Executive Director, the Ottawa Lifeline Program Manager and two representatives from VHA and VHA/Ottawa Lifeline program, on September 9th, 2002. During this meeting, Miriam Mas, President of Canines with a Cause shared in more detail what the program is about. She also expressed how much Canine's with a Cause would benefit from the use of Lifeline Canada's Emergency Response Service and button, in order to properly train the dogs to act in an emergency situation.

Lifeline Canada gladly agreed to assist us in our efforts to train the dogs by donating the necessary units and adaptive equipment for that purpose.

When the person in is their home and in need of emergency assistance, if they are able to speak, they will ask the Service Dog to retrieve the phone, but if unable to speak or unconscious, the dog will have to press the button which is linked to this Emergency Response Service.

When the Lifeline Response Center comes through in the speaker communicator, the dog will then bark to advise the Lifeline Response Center that the particular client is in need of assistance. Therefore, potentially making a great difference in a life threatening situation.

Many thanks to Valerie-de Young, VHA Executive Director; Jane Krider, Lifeline Canada, Ottawa Program Manager and Debbie Chaudhari and Debra Barlow, representatives from VHA and VHA/Ottawa Lifeline program, for their willingness and enthusiasm to help our program.

Also, special thanks to Hal Wirsching, the Lifeline Program Manager from Penetanguishene, Ontario, for facilitating and installing the unit in time for the recording of one of the episodes of the upcoming new series Healing with Animals with Discovery Health Canada. This episode will be aired in the coming months after the New Year and will demonstrate how these units are utilized and how the dogs are trained to use them.
