Emergency simulation exercise with Ottawa Police and CWAC dogs in training
July 16, 2008
From time to time, CWAC organizes an emergency simulation exercise with collaboration from the local Ottawa Police, Firemen or other Emergency services.
The purpose of this exercise is to ensure that the puppies in training will be prepared to face a real life emergency if it took place while working for their human partners.
Positive exposure to people in uniforms, emergency vehicles with loud sirens and lights are important. Puppies get plenty of treats when approaching the vehicle and officers with confidence.
One of the things they may face in a real life emergency is to be separated from their beloved handler as the emergency crew may need to assist the person. In those situations, the assistance dog must be removed at a safe distance most likely by a person in uniform, and be able to handle that in a controlled manner.
Our thank you goes to the volunteers from the Ottawa Police Kanata office, particularly Constable Ryan Strotmann and his working partner, as well as the CWAC volunteers that took the time to do this exercise.

Educational Presentation at the Ottawa Public Library - Centennial Branch
July 9, 2008
Canines with a Cause has been providing Educational & Awareness presentations at the Ottawa Public Library, Centennial Branch, for the past 7 years.
Once again, this year we gathered to share with a new group of children what CWAC and Assistance Dogs are about.
During these presentations, we provide a general overview to the children about assistance dogs, and the important role they play in our society.
The sessions also include live demonstrations of CWAC dogs in training as well as a slide show. The children go home with a CWAC activity booklet filled with more information, puzzles and activities that will assist them in gaining a better understanding on these working dogs. They are often eager to share what they learn with family members and friends, and with that, they help make our community a more welcoming one for individuals who have assistance dogs.
A big thank you goes to Andrea Gowing, Centennial Branch Ottawa Public Library Children's Activity Director and the rest of the Centennial Branch staff for requesting and organizing this session.

Forever Friends Dog Training Centre opens doors once again to CWAC
June, 2008
Once again, we count with the support from Cheryl Smith who has gratiously facilitated the 'Forever Friends Dog Training Centre' to Canines with a Cause for our weekly group training sessions.
Having access to an indoor training facility is paramount for our program. While we occasionally train at public venues throughout the city of Ottawa, we do require a location that will allow for such training with our Puppy Raisers in particularly during the winter and rainy days.
Thank you, Cheryl!

CWAC Latest addition to the program
May 14 , 2008
Dog Guides of Canada (operated by Lions Foundation of Canada) and Canines with a Cause recently participated in an exchange of puppies from each program. From our first litter of Golden Retrievers born in November of 2007, Dog Guides of Canada received a female Golden Retriever named Austen.
Just recently, CWAC received a beautiful female Labrador Retriever from Dog Guides of Canada, named Nina. Nina is in the CWAC Educational Program and quickly learning the ins and outs of the world of Assistance Dogs. Her job in helping educate the children has already began at a young age of 11 weeks old.
|
 |
 |
Through Through the CWAC Educational & Awareness program, CWAC shares with children and adults in the community the important role that Assistance dogs play in our society. They also learn how to better welcome them, and to pay close attention to their working gear and not be a distraction; to speak with the handler if they want to approach the dog and to accept the right of the handler to say 'no, thanks'. We also share the fact that no food should be offered or given to the dogs as they have a very special diet. To learn more about our educational program, please visit this page or contact us.

The Croskery Family donates electric wheelchair to CWAC to help train service dogs!
April 27, 2008
Thanks to the generosity of the Croskery family, Canines with a Cause will now count with an electric wheelchair to help train the service dogs.
| Although we count with the kind support from volunteers who use these chairs to help expose the puppies to work around this type of equipment, there isn't anything like having one handy to ensure all the dogs get comfortable with walking beside one, and maneuvering around one when being trained to eventually assist their human partner. |
 |
 |
A special thank you also goes to Tally Ho, for taking note that CWAC had the need for this equipment after checking our wish list.
CWAC has waited years for this moment and we are very grateful to all of you.
