Foster

Canines With A Cause thrives because of our amazing foster families. These volunteers provide enrichment, training and a little extra love for CWAC dogs until they find a forever home. Fostering is an excellent way to get some extra dog-time, learn new skills and support shelter dogs and veterans in your community. There are many ways to foster so you can choose what fits you best. We’ll be there every step of the way to help and provide encouragement, training and all the supplies you’ll need. All volunteers must attend an orientation and training before fostering CWAC dogs. In these training sessions you’ll learn skills to continue training, keep the dogs safe and have fun!

Hear it from our Fosters

“Being a CWAC foster dog parent is life changing and an amazing experience. For Tango, it was a great feeling providing him a temporary home because I gave him a fighting chance to be happy and be in a home. Fostering is also a way to help CWAC have more opportunities for other dogs to be service dogs.”

Foster Categories

Field Trip
Schedule to pick up dogs from the prison, take them for a fun outing, car ride or adventure and return them to the prison afterward. This type of experience allows the dog to explore new situations, while practicing training skills and also get an exciting change of scenery.

Emergencies
Should an emergency arise, we depend on our foster families for help. These volunteers are contacted should we need a foster quickly.

Weekend
This situation gives dogs the opportunity to practice skills and get some TLC in a home-environment over a weekend or for a few days.

Short Term 1-2 Weeks
Dogs that are awaiting placement may need a foster to care for them until their veteran is able to take them home.

Long Term
Occasionally, dogs that aren’t suitable for service work may need help from a foster family until they find their forever home.

Advanced Handling Fosters
Volunteers that have received advanced training and experience are able to foster dogs that need a little extra attention or training before they get adopted.
