Transforming two lives at once, Canines With a Cause (CWAC) pairs rescued dogs with veterans affected by PTSD, TBI, and MST, offering complimentary, personalized training classes to become psychiatric service dog teams. And like the military, it takes a team - or a “squad” to be successful. That’s why we created the Paw Squad!
Canines With a Cause is committed to providing all dog food and supplies, paid vet visits for the foster dog and compensation for any foster-caused damage.
Canines With a Cause thrives because of our amazing foster families. Our volunteers provide enrichment, training and a little extra love for CWAC dogs until they find their forever home. We could not do this life-saving work without our Paw Squad family.
Type of fostering
Paw Squad members choose between two foster roles: Active Duty and Reserve.
Active Duty fosters play a more active role in preparing one of our dogs for service dog candidacy and will receive a small monthly stipend.
Reserve fosters will continue to play a more traditional foster parent role.

At Canines With a Cause, we’re dedicated to finding forever homes for our canine friends. Once we adopt a dog into our program, we’re committed to ensuring they find a loving family to call their own.
While some dogs excel as service animals, others may not be suited for this high-stress, highly skilled work. These dogs, carefully evaluated by our team, are available for public adoption and make perfect loving family pets or therapy and emotional support companions.
Our Adoption Process
Our CWAC adoptable dogs have received comprehensive care, including spaying/neutering, vaccination, and microchipping. They also undergo behavioral and personality assessments, providing valuable insights to help adopters make informed decisions and find their ideal match.
While many of our dogs have received training through our programs, including those led by experienced trainers and veterans, as well as our prison program, the level of training varies by dog. As a result, adopters should not expect all dogs to have advanced training, but rather a range of skills, abilities and potential!
To ensure a harmonious match, we take a thoughtful approach to adoption. This includes a home evaluation and foster period, allowing us to assess compatibility and giving adopters a chance to experience life with their new dog. If an adopter is no longer able to provide care, we ask that they return the dog to us. This approach prioritizes the well-being of both our dogs and adopters and allows us to stay committed to our cause.

Donations in kind
Did you know tax deductible donations can made in cash, stocks, bonds or securities?
Donations in kind are donations of stock directly to Canines With a Cause. These donations are often made to reduce or eliminate the amount of tax that needs to be paid on appreciated assets. The donor that makes the donation will get receipts from their financial Institution indicating that the donation has been made. Canines With a Cause will send an Official Tax Statement directly to the donor once the donation has been received by CWAC’s financial institution. There may be significant tax advantages for doing this.
A donor may be able to avoid federal estate and income tax on the investments increase in value while still taking any charitable donation deduction. For example, he or she paid $10 per share for 100 shares of stock which increases to $100 a share. Donation of this stock to the CWAC is recorded as $10,000 donation. The tax effect is that the donor (a) avoids taxation on the $9,000 gain while still (b) likely qualifying for a charitable donation deduction for the full $10,000.
