Town Lift Article 2026

We’re honored to be featured in TownLift this month, highlighting 15 years of Canines With a Cause. The article shares how we pair rescue dogs with veterans affected by PTSD, traumatic brain injuries, and military sexual trauma — then guide them through up to two years of free, positive-reinforcement training to become certified psychiatric service dog teams.

Unlike programs that simply hand over a dog, CWAC believes in “training the trainer.” Weekly classes help veterans rebuild routines, confidence, and connection while their dogs learn life-changing tasks: waking from nightmares, retrieving medication, interrupting anxiety spirals, and creating space in crowds.

“Having a dog that allows you to go out in public is life-changing,” says Harleigh Poulson, CPDT-KA, our lead dog trainer and director of dog programs.

Since 2011, this model has helped veterans return to college, regain mobility, and rediscover purpose — while giving shelter dogs a second chance at life.
